Neighbors and Friends,

AZ election mail-in ballots are arriving this week and it's often a mystery when voting down ballot.  I usually look at someone’s yard, especially XXXX's.

But while so many of you are right around the corner (kind of), I also know that you know lots of people though out the County, and maybe have a social media account where you can spread the word even farther.  I've even attached something you can use.

Depending upon where one lives in Maricopa County, you may have the opportunity to cast votes for 1 or more members of the Maricopa Community Colleges Governing Board.

You probably do not know who these people are. This board is the 7-member elected entity that makes fundamental decisions for all 10 Maricopa Community Colleges (Mesa, Scottsdale, Glendale, Phoenix, Estrella Mountain, South Mountain, Chandler-Gilbert, Gateway, Rio Salado, and Paradise Valley).

The governing board election is CRITICAL; empowering the wrong individuals this election could (and most likely would) have literally disastrous consequences for the core mission of the Community College system, and all of the students we serve.  You may have seen recent news coverage of the chaos that is rampant at our colleges - the colleges that hundreds of thousands of Maricopa residents rely upon for their education.

The Maricopa Community Colleges Faculty Association (to which I belong) and the Classified Staff Association have both endorsed the following candidates, because of their stated dedication to the best interests of all the colleges and all of their students. If you care about the current health and future of our community colleges in the Valley, PLEASE consider casting your vote (and informing YOUR friends and family) for the following candidates:

  • District 1 (Southeast Valley): Roc Arnett (at-large)

  • District 2 (East & Northeast Valley): Roc Arnett (at-large)

  • District 3 (Central Valley): Marie Sullivan and Roc Arnett (at-large)

  • District 4 (Northwest Valley): Stan Arterberry and Roc Arnett (at-large)

  • District 5 (Southwest Valley): Roc Arnett (at-large) (note that Tom Nerini is uncontested for D5)

We appreciate your support for these pro-education candidates!

As you consider your ballot for Maricopa Community College Governing Board

As a community college instructor for over thirty years, I know that we need caring individuals who are willing to give their time to explore and deal with the complexities of higher education. I'm grateful to Marie Sullivan, Stan Arterberry , Tom Nerini, and Roc Arnett for being these people! Maricopa Community Colleges needs them! I would be happy to talk with any of my neighbors who would like more information. You can also learn about them on their websites and Facebook pages. Thank you for taking time to vote all the way down the ballot.

I also included the photo from Facebook.

Dear Friends:

This is NOT an appeal for money.  This IS an appeal for your votes.  There are two races on the ballot that are extraordinarily important, but that often fly under our radar of awareness. As a personal favor, I hope that you will keep reading and I hope that you will vote!!  Here is my take on two of these under-the-radar races, and -- full disclosure -- I have a personal connection, highlighted below, to both of these races:

1) The Maricopa Community Colleges (MCC) are managed/run by a Governing Board and that Board is made up of elected officials some of whom are on the Nov. ballot.  My personal connection to this election is that I am a professor at Glendale Community College. Over the past several years those elected to seats on the Governing Board have become more and more hostile to the very institution (the Maricopa Community Colleges) that they were elected to run.  We are trying to reverse this trend and below I list the candidates currently running for the Governing Board who I support and who I hope you will support with your vote!  For those who want to go straight to that list, please just skip the next paragraph

For those who like to dig deep and are interested in what I mean by the board becoming hostile, I invite you to review a document that I have attached to this email.  The document is a complaint sent to the Higher Learning Commission, which is the accrediting body for colleges and universities across a large swath of the US including Arizona.  The complaint is filed by John Schampel, the President of our own MCC Faculty Association, and it details the current Governing Board's behavior and its failure to prioritize the very educational responsibilities it was elected to carry out.

Here is the slate of candidates for the Governing Board that I support and that the MCC Faculty Association Political Action Committee has endorsed:

**For the At-Large Seat --  Roc Arnett (as long as you live in Maricopa County, Roc will be on your ballot)

**For the District 3 Seat -- Marie Sullivan (if you live in central Maricopa County, Marie will also be on your ballot)

**For the District 4 Seat -- Stan Arterberry (if you live in western Maricopa County, Stan will also be on your ballot)

Please vote for Roc, Marie and Stan!!

I'm done.  If you're still reading, I deeply appreciate it.  Elections matter and I am hopeful that we can make this one count!!

Warmly,

XXXX

Greetings neighbors, my name's XXX and I've been a teacher at the Maricopa Community Colleges for 12 years.  In the last election our governing board took a turn for the worse, with a majority tea party members taking control, whose main purpose it seems is to rip up the 40 year old policy manual governing faculty's working conditions and to cut them out of the process of providing any input.  That's why we're fighting like heck to bring more moderate, pro-student voices back this election year.  Please vote for Marie Sullivan (District 3) and Roc Arnett (at-large) this election - we really need your help and appreciate it!

EMCC colleagues and friends,

NOW is the time for us to blitz Facebook, Nextdoor, twitter, instagram, what-have-yous, with your endorsements for the Maricopa Community College governing board. Like, literally, right now. Early ballots are going out this week. I also suggest you personally email everyone you know who lives in Maricopa. Keep it simple and sweet. Here's what I've posted on Nextdoor, FB and emailed to my friends. And please remember to do this on your own time and not use Maricopa resources:

Many of you know the struggles the Maricopa Community Colleges have had since the governing board was taken over by anti-public education ideologues in 2016. That's why we're fighting like hell this election year to restore moderate, pro-student voices and help Linda Thor make Maricopa great again! Here's my recommendations- you'll find these races at the very bottom of the ballot- which is why I like to say, bottoms up!
